Wouter Valkenier

Wouter Valkenier

Architect at Studio Valkenier | Netherlands

Wouter Valkenier was a key figure in the design of four projects in Amsterdam that have set a new standard for ownership, reuse, and biodiversity for (formerly) forsaken places. You may have heard of them: Hannekes Boom, De Ceuvel, Tuin van BRET, and Schoonschip. By creating new opportunities for ‘lost’ spaces, Woulter has effectively created a catalyst of change for the whole city… and beyond! As an architect, urban designer, initiator, pioneer, cultural explorer, project ‘booster’, and city developer, Wouter gets his kicks by working to expand the lifespan of buildings and lower their ecological footprint. At the core of his projects – which he leads at Studio Valkenier – are themes of circularity, social impact, context-mapping, co-creation, material upcycling, demountable (aka portable) building, and non-toxic design. Oh, and he’s an advocate for spontaneity and imperfections – the charmer! One last word from Woulter? “We have the power to make experiments happen.”
