Wouter Schik
Content Expert for the European Green Capital & Leaf Awards Secretariat | The Netherlands
Wouter Schik believes in “starting tomorrows sustainability today”. To do this, he works as a senior consultant in sustainable design and development at Arcadis and supports the the European Green Capital and Leaf Award. Following a master’s degree in landscape design, and subsequently working as a landscape architect in Singapore and Brunei, Wouter stood at the helm of many successful urban revitalisation projects in his native Netherlands. This is where he gained the reputation for influence in sustainable urban design and development and for the past decade has been a registered expert for the Netherlands’ commission for environmental assessment in sustainable and circular urban and infrastructure development. In a former role at the Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Wouter set up and coordinated integral urban sustainability research projects, including the INTERREG project Grow2Build. Around the same time, he was vice president of the Sustainable Urban Development Committee of the Dutch professional organisations for urban planning and design (BNSP) and landscape architecture (NVTL). In a local and (inter)national level advisory role with Arcadis that clocks in at two decades, Wouter has helped Amersfoort achieve best city status for their sustainable and circular procurement of building and infrastructure projects, and the Dutch government accelerate the use of biobased materials in the construction sector. Wouter is an author, lecturer, and a member of the Sustainable Development Committee of European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations. He was formerly president of the European Green Deal Committee, and has helped to found and develop the Soesterhof neighbourhood, for which he was a finalist of the Dutch SKG sustainable urban development award, 2022.
