Tina Paillet strives to change the built environment’s detrimental modus operandi. In response, she leads strategy and business development of Circotrade, a technologically enabled trading platform which allows the circularity of a building’s components to be realised and traded. By increasing the uptake of secondary construction materials and products, Tina wants to address and reduce the impact that the built environment has on climate change. And as – she says – only 1% of demolition materials and products are currently reused, there’s a lot of potential! At a more granular level, Circotrade applies the principles of commodities futures trading to the construction sector, thus overcoming the barriers to material reuse. This gives property owners the capacity to plan for material reuse, creating new tradeable assets. This is essential, she points out, as the shift to a circular economy – reducing embodied carbon in the process – will only happen if it makes financial sense.
