Manal El-Shahat

Manal El-Shahat is an urban planner, researcher, and activist, as well as an associate professor at the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University (ASU) in Cairo, Egypt. She is also a licensed GIZ and DGNB consultant for sustainable built environment and development projects. For more than 20 years, Manal has been working on international urban planning and interdisciplinary research projects, including with the University of Stuttgart, Germany. She is the founder of EZBET e.V. and its Egyptian counterpart KAIROS City LAB. With an abundance of academic, research, and practical experience, Manal and her research team are experimenting with different innovative construction techniques and planning tools adapted to the economic, social, and environmental context. Her areas of expertise include participatory planning interventions and traditional building techniques, such as earthen construction.
