The Strategy department of Heilbronn, Germany, has a mission to turn sustainability into shared, practical progress. Heading the department is Julia Hufnagel, whose team creates impact by aligning sustainability efforts across the administration and making progress measurable.
She believes that cities must drive the transition to a fair, healthy, and climate-resilient future so, together with her team, Julia brings stakeholders together, sets the strategic direction, and translates goals into action.
Julia was also involved in developing the city’s sustainability strategy and led their SDG review, as well as coordinating the process that helped Heilbronn win the European Green Capital Award 2027. This, she says, shows how coordinated work can raise ambition citywide and create momentum for sustainability action and urban transformation when partnerships are built between citizens, science, business, and civil society.
