Professor of Politics at the University of Westminster | UKGraham Smith is Professor of Politics at the Centre for the Study of Democracy, University of Westminster, UK. He is an internationally-recognised specialist in democratic innovation – new forms of public participation in political decision making. Graham has a particular expertise in participatory climate governance and is chair of the Knowledge Network on Climate Assemblies (KNOCA) funded by the European Climate Foundation. KNOCA aims to enhance the impact of climate assemblies by improving their commissioning, design, implementation, follow-up, and evaluation. Graham's work, particularly on citizens' assemblies, has influenced practice across a range of countries, including collaborations with governments, practitioners, civil society organisations, and activists. His publications include Democratic Innovations: Designing Institutions for Citizen Participation (Cambridge, 2009), Can Democracy Safeguard the Future? (Polity, 2021), and Democracy in a Pandemic: Participation in Response to Crisis (University of Westminster Press, 2021, edited with colleagues at the participation charity Involve).
