Aidan Cerar is one of the originators of Zunaj, an innovative mechanism for community-based placemaking. Outdoors, as Zunaj translates in English, helped Ljubljana’s residents carry out interventions in their own neighbourhoods by offering consultation and support for implementation.
There’s a new cycle every year, which has brough a diverse range of projects to Slovenia’s capital city, including a popup cinema in a housing estate and refurbishment of a neglected courtyard.
By stimulating collective action, each of these relatively small interventions has influenced community building, place-making, and the communal maintenance of spaces. In fact, the results have been so positive that Zunaj has spread to other Slovenian municipalities.
